Popular Midwest Burger Joint Steak 'n Shake Now Open in Fresno

If you’ve lived in California your whole life, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Steak ‘n Shake.

The burger joint, founded in Illinois in 1934 by a guy named Gus Belt, has a huge following in the Midwest. Thanks to franchising, Steak ‘n Shakes are now popping up all around the country, including one of their newest locations in Fresno.

Steak ‘n Shake is not located in a trendy spot along Friant or Herndon, which is where a lot of new restaurants have opened recently. It’s located on Kings Canyon near Peach in southeast Fresno, right by Walmart and a new Del Taco.

As a lifelong Sunnyside resident, I love that Steak ‘n Shake took a chance on my zip code! Big shout out to the often overlooked 93727.

What to Order

Steak ‘n Shake is known for their premium burgers and milkshakes. They use 100% beef with no preservatives or artificial ingredients. The Steakburgers’ patties include steak and are seared on a fiery-hot grill.

I ordered the Original Double Cheese ‘N Fries. That’s two patties with American cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomato, onion, and ketchup.

It ran me $6.89. That’s a little bit more than some other burger joints, but you really could taste the quality.

My burger was juicy and had lots of flavor. I also enjoyed the fries, which are skinny.

It’s a pretty big menu. There are burgers with bacon, mushrooms, guacamole, and jalapenos. There’s also a Steakburger called a Frisco Melt which has sweet ‘n tangy sauce and American and Swiss cheese, and is served on grilled sourdough.

Steak ‘n Shake also serves up hot dogs, salads, chicken sandwiches, and chili.

As for the milkshakes, they say they’re made the same way they were back in 1934 when they opened. They’re hand-dipped, mixed with milk and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. In addition to the traditional chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, there are a variety of candy and cookie flavors.
