I’ve lived in Fresno for a few years now and during this time I’ve become friends with some pretty crafty individuals. My own craftiness is still a mystery to me. In all honesty, I’m sure I skipped arts and crafts in grade school; the only artifact my parents still have is the typical handprint dipped in paint.
But back to the crafty people I know.
Recently, I had been running around for most of the day on an empty stomach and I could not bring myself around to doing the lazy thing of purchasing two chalupas, two soft tacos, and a small Sprite at an establishment we all know too well. I needed some type of substance. Isn’t it amazing that, at times when things seem so bleak, you tend to receive news that wipes everything clear?
The news for me was delivered in a simple phone call. “Hey bud, we’re cooking and wondering if you’d like to come over and try our new recipe.” Alas, the moment of deliverance was at hand but the caveat was that the deliverance was going to be served up by vegan cooks.
Anyone who knows me knows I’m a basically a T-rex in human form (leave my arms out of this). I’m a carnivore, I’m a meat lover, but given the fact it’s 2017, I’m also a guy who is attempting to turn over a new leaf—no pun intended—and try new things.
My friends Ashley and Ashlee, not a law firm, are two of the better hosts I have within my circle of friends. The couple has created a cult following of vegan food lovers through their site Eat Figs, Not Pigs. I know nothing of the vegan world, but there I found myself being pulled into a mixture of what smelled amazing and the thought of my mother saying, “Son, these Brussels sprouts will bless your soul.”
I’m not sure if any of you out there have experienced homemade spicy cauliflower tacos drizzled with cashew crema and pickled cabbage. If you have, I wish you’d informed me about this earlier in my life.
Now I’m informing you: Root General Store in downtown Fresno is hosting a pop-up dinner event Saturday, July 22, which will showcase a four-course vegan menu created by—you guessed it—Eat Figs, Not Pigs.
Do yourselves a favor and look up these ladies before they leave the Valley and end up on some fancy cooking channel. Perhaps even call to have them cook for your next bottle share or couple’s night in—you will not be disappointed. Who knew veggies could be this good!
