If you’ve driven around Old Town Clovis over the years, chances are you’ve seen Clovis Ink Tattoo. What you may not know is that it’s home to a pretty incredible local story.
Back in 2007, Rudy Acosta and his father set out to open what would become the first tattoo shop in Clovis history. It wasn’t easy. Tattooing wasn’t as widely accepted as it is today, and getting the business approved took persistence, patience, and a belief that tattooing deserved to be treated as both an art and a profession.
For Rudy and his father, the goal was never simply to open another tattoo shop. They wanted to create a place where tattooing would be held to a higher standard, built on professionalism, trust, and respect for both the craft and the people walking through the door. What started as a shared family dream has grown into a business that has become part of the Clovis community for nearly two decades.
Nearly 19 years later, Clovis Ink Tattoo is still going strong.
That kind of longevity doesn’t happen by accident. Through changing trends, economic ups and downs, and the everyday challenges of running a small business, they’ve built something every business hopes for: trust.
And when you’re a tattoo artist, trust means everything.
People walk through the door with stories they’ll carry for the rest of their lives. Memorial tattoos, fresh starts, family tributes, cover-ups, and personal milestones all represent deeply personal moments. Every tattoo tells a story, and every client places their confidence in the artist creating it.
Rudy believes clients are trusting him with far more than their skin. They’re trusting him with their memories, their grief, their confidence, and their stories. It’s a responsibility he has never taken lightly, and one that continues to shape the way Clovis Ink Tattoo serves every client who walks through the door.

Now he’s sharing nearly two decades of experience with the next generation through his new book, Kings of Flesh: The Survival Guide. Written for apprentices, working tattoo artists, mentors, and shop owners, the book goes beyond tattoo techniques to cover the realities of building a lasting career. It dives into safety, sanitation, client care, ethics, mentorship, burnout, and the business lessons that only years inside a working shop can teach.
Rather than keeping those hard-earned lessons to himself, Rudy hopes the book helps future tattoo artists build stronger careers and avoid mistakes before they happen. It’s his way of giving back to the profession while helping raise the standard for tattooing throughout the Central Valley and beyond.
It’s a story that’s even caught the attention of the Fresno Bee and Yahoo, which recently featured Rudy and Clovis Ink Tattoo following the release of the book.
I love stories like this because they remind us what local businesses are really built on. Behind every storefront is someone who took a chance, worked through the tough seasons, and kept showing up for their community.
Whether you’re thinking about getting your first tattoo or simply enjoy supporting local businesses with great stories, Clovis Ink Tattoo is one of those places that’s left its mark on Clovis in more ways than one.
Nearly two decades after becoming Clovis’ first tattoo shop, Clovis Ink continues to prove that great local businesses aren’t measured only by how long they’ve been around. They’re remembered for the trust they earn, the stories they become part of, and the people they impact along the way.
