Here’s how it started: my Instagram feed randomly served me a video of a couple visiting from the Midwest, raving that they’d just had the best coffee in all of California – they shared with their nearly 500k followers that the best coffee they’d had on their travels wasn’t in LA or San Francisco, but in the small Central Valley city of Selma. That’s the kind of claim that gets my attention, so when a friend mentioned she needed to drive to Selma to pick up an antique store purchase, I saw my opportunity.
The shop in question is Maiden Voyage Coffee, tucked into peaceful downtown Selma at 2000 High Street, about 25 minutes from Fresno. I’m just going to go ahead and spoil it for you now: yes, it’s worth the drive.

We looked up the menu ahead of time and immediately started making plans for our orders. My friend went straight for the Banana Nut Bread Latte, a pre-batched, can’t-be-modified kind of drink made with cold brew, oatmilk, house banana puree, and cold foam on top (she loved it). I couldn’t decide between two: The Spaniard, a mocha-style drink built on imported Spanish dark chocolate, or the Shakerato, an espresso shaken Italian-style with imported muscovado sugar — a deep, unrefined brown sugar with a molasses-forward flavor. Both sounded excellent and spoke to how seriously the shop takes ingredients, plus, all their syrups are made in house, which is in my opinion, the mark of a coffee shop that really cares about the quality of their drinks.

Inside the coffee shop, leather seating, dark warm wood, deep emerald green tiles creates a modern but inviting space and their ship-and-sea theme branding is consistent and cool without feeling gimmicky (I bought a branded mug and saucer for home). It was busy the day we went, and we found out why: that same viral video had sent a wave of new visitors their way. Even with the crowd, the vibe felt more like a room full of regulars than a room full of tourists. A big communal table hosted a casual meeting, smaller tables were full of people chatting over their drinks, and the pastry case had a jalapeño and cheese bagel, toasted with cream cheese, that called my name. They were also making breakfast burritos that I’ve since seen people rave about online.

According to their About Us page, Maiden Voyage started as a mobile cart before husband-and-wife founders Robert and Irene opened up shop in downtown Selma, with a stated goal of helping revitalize the area and giving people a place to gather. A friend who grew up in Selma remembered the building as Archie’s, a beloved family diner from her childhood. She still misses the old spot, but she was quick to say Maiden Voyage did the space justice.
And here’s the part that makes the short drive to Selma a full outing rather than just a coffee stop: within one short walking block, you’ll find three great second-hand shops. My Vintage & Thrift sits catty corner from the café, High Street Boutique a couple doors down is a large, multi-booth antique store with a wide selection and fair prices, and around the corner is 3rd Times a Charm Vintage Boutique, another multi-vendor shop with a great mix of vintage finds and some new items too. All three are worth a browse, and together with Maiden Voyage, they make for a genuinely fun Saturday morning in Selma – I highly recommend it, and frankly – you might see me there!

Maiden Voyage Coffee is located at 2000 High Street, in Selma, CA and their business hours are Monday-Friday: 7 AM–4 PM, Saturdays: 8 AM–4 PM, Closed on Sundays.
