The 20th Annual Tower District Mardi Gras Parade will kick off at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26. This year’s theme is Myths, Folks and Fairy Tales, so expect to see lots of your favorite storybook characters in attendance.
The parade will begin at Olive and Palm avenues, making its way east down Olive to Maroa. There will be floats, live bands, choral groups, dancers, car clubs and more. Show up early to stake out a good spot for viewing.
And there’s another reason to show up to the 2017 parade: this may be its last year.
On the Tower District website, a plea for donations explains how the City of Fresno is now requiring hard closures of the streets surrounding the parade—at a cost of $5,000, it’s a fee organizers can’t cover. An ABC30 story today explains how the closures are required to protect crowds of parade-watchers from drivers, and that organizers of the event are worried for the future of this Tower District tradition.
