We have another perfect Fall weekend in store for us. The weather is going to perfect for pretty much anything you might want to do. Patio Dining? Shopping? Farmer’s Markets? Food Trucks? It’s all happening this weekend and there’s no excuse not to get outside, right?

Friday is National Civic Pride Day and you probably know how we feel about that. Civic pride is that sense of attachment and belonging that individuals feel for their community. Looking up a definition on the Google, they suggest that it is a complex emotion that encompasses a variety of factors, including satisfaction with the community’s quality of life, its residents, and its shared values. That’s a lot of fancy words. We like the much simpler version, we simply call it FresYes!

The Central Valley Veterans Day Parade 2023

Fresno is honored to have a large amount of Veterans that call this special place of ours – home. Did you know that we also host one of the largest Veteran Day Parades in the country? We do! It will be broadcast locally here on t.v. but also carried on American Forces Network, nationally and internationally – all over the world!

We encourage you to make your way downtown Saturday Morning and make your pride known. Here’s the parade route.

The Schedule:

9:30 am: Pre-ceremony
10:45 am: Opening ceremony
11:11 am: Parade kick-off

The parade starts promptly at 11:11 AM

Wondering why all the Elevens? No, it’s not a Spinal Tap thing. The day was originally known as Armistice Day, and was established on November 11, 1918, to commemorate the end of World War I. The Armistice was signed on the 11th day of the 11th month, precisely at the 11th hour.

With that in mind here are 11 things you can do to brighten a Vet’s day.

Give some cash to a veterans charity. There are a bunch of great organizations that help veterans. Your donation can help with everything from medical care to housing to job placement.
Volunteer your time. There are tons of ways to volunteer with veterans. You could help out at a VA hospital, a homeless shelter, or a job training program. You could also drive veterans to appointments, help them with paperwork, or just visit with them and listen to their stories.
Hire a vet. When you’re looking for a new employee, keep veterans in mind. They have a wide range of skills and experience, and they’re usually hard-working and dedicated.
Support vet-owned businesses. When you’re shopping, look for businesses that are owned by veterans. It’s a great way to show your support and help them succeed in civilian life.
Learn about vets and their issues. A lot of people don’t know much about the challenges that veterans face. Take some time to educate yourself and others about things like PTSD, homelessness, and unemployment. You can also advocate for policies and programs that support veterans.
Be a good neighbor to vets. If you know a veteran, be nice to them. Check in on them regularly, offer to help them with errands, and just let them know you care. Your support can make a big difference in their lives.
Say thanks to a vet. One of the simplest ways to help a veteran is to simply thank them for their service. It’s a small gesture, but it can mean a lot. Beware though, a 2019 poll indicated that 49% of Veterans do not appreciate being thanked for their service. If you know there’s a Vet in the coffee line behind you – you could always do that “pay it forward thing” and pay for their coffee on the downlow.
Sponsor a vet. There are a number of organizations that allow you to sponsor a veteran. This could involve providing financial assistance, mentorship, or just friendship.
Send a care package to a vet. Sending a care package to a veteran is a thoughtful way to show your support and appreciation. You could include items like snacks, toiletries, books, and magazines.
Visit a VA hospital. Visiting a VA hospital is a great way to show your support for veterans and learn more about the challenges they face. You could volunteer your time, donate items to the hospital, or just visit with veterans and listen to their stories.
Go to a veterans event. Like our Central Valley Veterans Day Parade! There are all sorts of other veterans events held throughout the year. Going to these events is a fun way to show your support for veterans and learn more about their service.

Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the life of a veteran. So please take some time this weekend to find a way to help a vet.

I grew up in Fresno. Relaxed in its calm breezes, listened with my dad to the crack of the bat at little league baseball games when I was a kid and now take my son to do the same at minor league games. I broadened my mind at its schools (I went to high school right here at San Joaquin Memorial, and to college at Fresno State!) I love that if I drive for two hours in one direction, I can be in the mountains. For two hours in another, luxuriating on a California beach. I can enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere of San Francisco or Los Angeles, but still be able to come home to relaxation, calm, and quiet.

I love where I live, and I also love what I do. I'm lucky to be able to work in a profession in which I get to build relationships; one that has me meeting new people each and every day and helping them to build new lives in my beloved city. I'm lucky enough to work in a profession in which I can marry cutting-edge technologies and marketing techniques to good, old-fashioned, nose-to-the-grindstone work.
