The last few weeks have been a bit of a blur; perhaps it has to do with the fact our weather has made everything seem like a mirage of sorts. I was attempting to explain to my friends that I found a spatula and broken eggshells on the sidewalk last weekend, and I’m almost certain the kids in the neighborhood were testing their cooking skills on the blistering pavement. If only I could return to the days of magnifying glasses, lemonade stands, and water balloon fights during the summer, instead of worrying about my bills and receding hairline (I digress).
So I woke up recently and said to myself, “Self, let’s do something a bit different.” (I’m good, I’m good—I didn’t respond to myself, so no need for alarm.) As I stood over my ironing board, slowly burning my work shirt, it hit me: Today is the day I’m going to pole!
I remembered I had heard of a place in town that was set up for pole exercise. Yes, you read that correctly—pole exercise. At first I couldn’t wrap my mind around the idea of a pole being used for exercise purposes, given the stigma. (Poles are of course identified with the stripper industry.) However, I decided I had to check out and maybe even experience this activity this for myself.
The idea of having to phone a friend to help me find the pole exercise studio wasn’t an option because I would be revealing myself, and I was still unsure as to whether or not guys were even allowed on the premises. Luckily, I’ve always been good with names, and eventually the name hit me: Aerial Angels Pole Fitness Studio.
During my drive, a small voice kept telling me to turn around and go home. I mean, what if I bumped into a neighbor or fellow parishioner? There would be no living this down, though I’ve definitely done worse. (But there’s no need to divulge those details, given the fact my mum might read this article.)
As I pulled into the driveway and saw the cars and signage, I knew there was no turning back; I was on a mission to get more details and shed some light on this exercise.
“Hello, may I help you?” said a sweet voice from behind a desk when I walked in. It was almost as if the most innocent face in all of the world was sitting there asking, waiting for me to state my case for walking through the doors. After quickly shaking off some nerves, I was to the point and asked, “What is pole exercise and who is it for?”
Jennifer Sihavong, owner/instructor at Aerial Angels, paused for a moment, smiled, and stated that pole exercise is basically an alternate form of exercise for women who don’t want to do the typical gym style of working out. This is for someone from young adult to retired individual who is looking for something different.
The more she spoke about the studio, the more I could see the passion in her eyes and hear the excitement in her voice. This was definitely a welcoming place for those who are willing to give something unique a chance. Aerial Angels is for women only, but I was allowed to give it a try for the sake of this article. Yes, it was fun, and NO, I’m not an aerial angel!
