What’s Hot & Happening December 8 – 10

By FresYes Writing Team

Hey, we get it! Amidst the joyous whirlwind of the holiday season, it’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy of preparations, festivities, and social obligations. However, amidst the merriment, it’s crucial to carve out moments to slow down and truly savor the season’s unique magic.

While social gatherings and festive feasts contribute to the season’s joy, it’s equally important to prioritize individual well-being. Whether it’s a quiet moment with a captivating book, a rejuvenating walk in nature, or simply relaxing and appreciating the quietude, tending to personal needs ensures we are fully present and capable of embracing the season’s magic.

By making a conscious effort to slow down and prioritize well-being, we can transform the holiday season from a fleeting rush into a cherished experience, one that nourishes our spirits and fosters lasting connections with loved ones. Let’s make this holiday season one we truly remember for its warmth, togetherness, and personal fulfillment.

And isn’t that what this post is supposed to be all about each week?

Tamales

Ok so outside of maybe your best friend’s Abuela, who makes the best tamales?

Did you know that the tradition of eating tamales at Christmas goes back for ages. Tamales themselves go way back to Mesoamerica and were chowed down by the Aztecs, Mayans, and Olmecs. They were like the VIP dish for special occasions and even got some love from the gods. After the conquistadors arrived and banned human sacrifice, little bundles of corn — tamales — were “sacrificed” instead.

Plus, these bad boys were the OG takeout—they were easy to carry, traveled well, tasted great, so they fed folks that were off on battles or hunting trips.

Tamales and tamale making are all about tradition – bringing multiple generations together in a labor of love often accompanied by warm memories and laughter. If you ever made tamales, you probably did so with a group of people.

In the mood for a great tamale now?

Friday night, the Tamale Throwdown, presented by Fresno Street Eats and held at Tioga Sequoia Brewing Co. in Downtown Fresno, will feature seven fantastic local tamale creators competing for top honors. The event kicks off at 5 pm and runs until 10 pm. It’s open to all ages, and guess what? Admission is totally free!

They will have Judges’ Choice and Peoples’ Choice awards to hand out, deciding who has the best tamales in the Central Valley. Check out some of the competitors: Me Gusta Tamales, which has won awards up and down the state for its tamales; Tamale Mama, who is a viral local success story; Miguel’s Salsa, which was recently named the No. 1 place to eat in the Valley by Yelp, plus other great tamale makers like Tacos Ama, The Golden Tamale, and Vornitas!

And yes, bring your best friend’s Abuela too!

Head YES man at FresYes.com
I grew up in Fresno. Relaxed in its calm breezes, listened with my dad to the crack of the bat at little league baseball games when I was a kid and now take my son to do the same at minor league games. I broadened my mind at its schools (I went to high school right here at San Joaquin Memorial, and to college at Fresno State!) I love that if I drive for two hours in one direction, I can be in the mountains. For two hours in another, luxuriating on a California beach. I can enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere of San Francisco or Los Angeles, but still be able to come home to relaxation, calm, and quiet.

I love where I live, and I also love what I do. I'm lucky to be able to work in a profession in which I get to build relationships; one that has me meeting new people each and every day and helping them to build new lives in my beloved city. I'm lucky enough to work in a profession in which I can marry cutting-edge technologies and marketing techniques to good, old-fashioned, nose-to-the-grindstone work. I am lucky enough to work in a profession that allows me to work as an advocate for my clients; to use every tool at my disposal to get a job done well for them, and with as little stress and expense as possible.

I love my city. I love my job. One inspires my excellence for the other.

Who is FresYes?

Fresyes.com was started by me, Jason Farris. Yes, I'm in real estate. I think that real estate is so much more than buying and selling homes. It's all about the lifestyle, it's about community. Here in the Fresno / Clovis area we have such a wonderful sense of community. I wanted a place that best reflects the people, the places and the lifestyle that we call home. Fresyes.com is that place. We have fabulous authors who share what makes this community of ours so special. I also write here, and not always about real estate. You can find all my posts HERE
