Today we get to chat with Laura from Abigail’s Candy Shop in Clovis, where the magic of candy and the whimsy of Willy Wonka collide! Abigail just might be a real-life Charlie Bucket. The shop is like a golden ticket to paradise, with colorful sweets and treats that are more tempting than a snozzberry-flavored wallpaper. From the everlasting gobstoppers to the fizzy lifting drinks, Abigail’s candies are simply scrumdiddlyumptious! If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll be in candy heaven at Abigail’s Candy Shop!
So tell us, who are you, where did you come from, and what do you do?
We are The Smiths. My husband Scott and I ( Laura) have been married for 23 years. He was raised in Fresno and I was raised in Tulare. We met while both going to college in San Luis Obispo. We have two kiddos who you will see running around in the shop. Abigail, the store’s name sake – and Jake Ray who is 7. We are both owners of Abigail’s Candy Shop.
Tell us a little about your business.
In May we celebrate 16 years in Business! Abigail’s Candy Shop is a mom and pop retro and novelty candy shop. We first opened up as a franchise called Powell’s Sweet Shoppe. Around ten years in, the franchise collapsed, and we decided to name the business after our daughter, Abigail. We carry over 4,000 different types of candy. Many retro candies that you don’t see much of anymore. Lots of fun novelty candy, including oh so popular TikTok candies. We have candies from other countries, candies by bulk, including Jelly Bellies , retro sodas, popcorn, gourmet chocolates and sweets from some local businesses like Dads Cookies, Grandma’s Butterbuches, and the popular freeze dried candy from DD’s Freeze dried treats.
We also have theatre candy that surrounds our Movie Theatre that plays Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on a loop. We also carry lots of fun gifts such as retro toys, stuffed animals including the squishable brand, mugs and much more. We are the perfect place to grab your movie treat or to find a fun gift.
Tell us about something that you do that makes you stand out
We strive to give our customers that old fashion customer service! We want them to walk in and feel like they are stepping back into time. We love to hear stories of a memory a certain candy brought back! Over the years we have been privileged to see couples on first dates, turn into marriage proposals and wedding anniversaries. We have customers who have grown up visiting the store with their parents and now bring their kids in. We try to always support our community and schools with donations. We are humbled and proud to be considered your local candy shop.
What is it that most people DON’T know about your business?
A few things people may not know. We offer fundraising events and we offer scavenger hunts for birthday parties or just for fun! We also do special occasion baskets.
One of the questions we get asked the most is, “Do you ever get sick of the Willie Wonka movie?” Truthfully… No. It’s such a part of the experience that when it’s off, I feel like something is completely missing.
Fun Fact: Until the moment we opened the store I had never actually watched the original Willy Wonka growing up!
Anything coming up?
We have Mothers Day coming up and will be offering baskets and chocolate boxes for mom! I’m always looking for new and fun yummy items to bring in and I’m always coming up with fun ideas for the shop!
