Dear readers,
I need to confess I have been sleeping on an absolute delight of a business in Clovis, Monstera Coffee Studio and The Backyard Social Club. Last weekend, my husband and I planned to go to Two Cities Coffee in Old Town Clovis, then walk the Dry Creek Trail to get some exercise, enjoy the fall weather (so glad it’s finally here!), and do a little early leaf peeping.
When we arrived at Two Cities, we were disappointed to find a sign on the door saying they were closed for the day. (Hey, it’s a family-owned local business. There’s no shame in occasionally taking a day for what’s needed, and I respect that.) I quickly ran through the list of Clovis coffee shops in the back of my mind and remembered Monstera Coffee Studio, located at the Backyard Social Club. It seemed like the perfect alternative since we were hoping to sit outside, and what better outdoor seating could there be than an entire business built around a comfortable, relaxing backyard?

When we arrived, it was relatively quiet, but the coffee shop was serving a steady stream of people with super friendly service. There were multiple fall drinks to choose from, including an apple pie latte, a brown butter latte, and several new iced matcha drinks, among them a matcha sunrise made with cherry, lime, and orange juice, and a cream delight matcha with white chocolate, vanilla, maple syrup, and a dash of cinnamon. Their regular specialties include the Chantilly latte, a mixed berry latte with vanilla almond cold foam, and a banana bread latte made with real banana.

I ordered a brown butter cortado, and my husband tried the apple pie latte. Since we mentioned it was our first time in, the cashier made a point of giving us an intro to the entire place. She told us about the indoor seating upstairs, with a shuffleboard table and TVs showing the many games that were playing. There’s also a stage for live music, which they have daily, and a bar serving local and craft beers and seltzers. The bar opens at 11am, and you can order from it both inside and at an outdoor window for convenience. And of course, there’s the expansive backyard seating area.

We went upstairs and enjoyed a game of shuffleboard while we waited for our drinks (I forgot how fun it is to play!). The upstairs area is cozy, warm, and pretty. The building itself is historic, and the gorgeous, colorful stained-glass windows make the light inside really lovely. Once we had our drinks, we made our way to the backyard, where we were greeted by the property pet, a cat named Turkey and enjoyed the sound of the waterfall pouring into the koi and turtle pond.

A group of friends arrived, placed drink orders, and took out the craft projects they were working on while they caught up with one another. Others trickled in and sat with friends to enjoy drinks. Once the bar snacks started coming out, they looked so tempting that we forwent our walk and ordered a chicken Caesar wrap and a big soft pretzel with nacho cheese and spicy brown mustard. Both were super delicious, and the prices were reasonable.

Before we left, we wandered a bit more and discovered a retro arcade right off the backyard, plus ping pong. So much to do and enjoy! We had such an incredibly pleasant time at Monstera/The Backyard Social Club that I really want to make weekend mornings there a regular thing. The owners have done a great job creating a place where you’ll want to pull up a chair and stay awhile. I highly recommend a visit to everyone who’s ready for a relaxing weekend morning, especially while we’re enjoying this incredible stretch of fall weather. You won’t regret the trip!
