My porch is decorated with witches hats, skeletons and spider webs (both artificial and a few “organic” haha). My neighbors have a HUGE spider and web across their entire yard, and at the end of the cul de sac I can see a giant werewolf – it’s spooky season and while there used to just be one day a year to go out and and collect free candy, the growth of trunk or treating events has led to multiple weeks of free community events for kids to enjoy, and Fresno has embraced this new tradition whole-heartedly. Between school carnivals, car-show trunk or treats, and community nights hosted by local businesses and nonprofits, there is something happening almost every day between now and Halloween.
I did a deep dive through as many flyers and event posts I could find floating around Instagram and Facebook and compiled the info into one easy list, organized by date to help you and the little ones in your life have the best spooky season yet! Every event on this list is free. Times and details are accurate to the best of my knowledge at the time of posting, though check the websites or social accounts of host organizations prior to heading out is always wise practice.

A Few Tips for a Memorable (and Meltdown-Free) Night
- Dress for comfort and the weather. Make sure costumes are comfortable, and toss in extra layers in case it gets chilly or rains.
- Check the view. If your little one is wearing a mask or special effects makeup, make sure they can see clearly so they don’t trip or run into things (or other people).
- Be realistic about the schedule. Pick a few events you’re most excited about instead of trying to hit them all. Fewer stops means fewer meltdowns (for the kids and the grown-ups). Arrive early or right near the start time, too, since most events run while supplies last.
- Feed them first. A good meal before you go helps head off the dreaded sugar crash.
- Teach a little gratitude. Many of these free events are volunteer run, with candy and resources donated. Talk to your kids ahead of time about saying thank you and taking a fair share so there’s enough for everyone to enjoy.
- Don’t forget the parent tax. You are entitled to at least a few Twix or Reese’s pumpkins. Thems the rules.
