“Dirt made my lunch” —The Banana Slug String Band

In elementary school, the Banana Slug String Band really hammered in the point that food comes from the soil. The sad truth was my mom was only an assembly worker in the ecosystem of brown bag lunches—dirt did all the work, and it continues to do so.

If you want to discover more about the magic of dirt, there’s no need to expose yourself to this ear-worm of a song. You can just head to Clovis Botanical Garden on Saturday, Jan. 6, for a Science Saturday event that’s fun for the entire family.

Located on Alluvial and Clovis avenues next to Dry Creek park, Clovis Botanical Garden is a local treasure. I’ve written before about their mission to educate the public about gardening, as well as their community events. There are a lot of garden designs to see, and all of them are compatible with our Valley’s gardening zone. CBG offers help with water-wise gardening and other tips, like how to mulch, but their newest venture is geared for the entire family.

January is for Critters and Compost

On the first Saturday of every month, Clovis Botanical Garden offers an all-ages Science Saturday event that explores in a hands-on way a topic relevant to the the Central Valley and the season. The cost is $10 for the entire family to attend, with proceeds going to the Clovis Botanical Garden Children’s Garden Project.

Check it out this Saturday and get the dirt on dirt. The theme for January is Critters and Compost, and it will explore the ecosystem in the soil and include a worm bin. I don’t know why, but it seems like kids go crazy for worms.

Aside from the worm bin, there will be a guided walk, games, and an experiment related to all things compost. After learning all about dirt and who lives in it, you can take home your own compost. If your New Year’s resolution is to be kind to the earth, or if you just want nice dirt in your yard, composting is the way to go. It can be a daunting thought to turn kitchen scraps into soil, but here’s your chance to try it and explore the various ways dirt makes your lunch.

Who is FresYes?

Fresyes.com was started by me, Jason Farris. Yes, I'm in real estate. I think that real estate is so much more than buying and selling homes. It's all about the lifestyle, it's about community. Here in the Fresno / Clovis area we have such a wonderful sense of community. I wanted a place that best reflects the people, the places and the lifestyle that we call home. Fresyes.com is that place. We have fabulous authors who share what makes this community of ours so special. I also write here, and not always about real estate. You can find all my posts HERE
