We are so lucky to have a world-class zoo right here in Fresno. Not only does the Fresno Chaffee Zoo constantly work to give animals and visitors the very best experience, but it also puts on some of the most unforgettable events in the Valley. And one of the absolute favorites? IllumiNature.
If you remember the old Zoolights tradition, you already know how charming and cozy a holiday evening at the zoo can be. But in the last few years, this event has had a major glow up. IllumiNature has transformed from thousands of traditional holiday lights strung throughout the Zoo into a full after-hours, nighttime exhibit where the entire zoo becomes a glowing world of giant handmade lanterns, immersive light displays, and whimsical interactive moments. It’s honestly magical.
I was lucky enough to get an early sneak peek of this year’s IllumiNature during press night, and I can confidently say this is the best version yet. There are more lanterns than ever, more interactive experiences, more games, more delicious treats, and more spots where you’ll want to stop and take photos. It’s beautiful, relaxing, and the perfect way to spend an evening with people you love.
Some of my favorite scenes and experiences from this year:
- The animatronic stallion that wowed my entire group
- The giant animatronic crab surrounded by glowing, swimming sea life
- The room filled with hanging lights and mirrors (seriously… the perfect spot for your Instagram stories)
- The super fun whack-a-mole games
- The stunning Pegasus pulling a Cinderella-style carriage
- The giant iridescent elephant, which you just have to see in person
- Making smores over fire pits and drinking hot cocoa
IllumiNature always brings out the kid in everyone, and this year, the Zoo added even more ways to make the night special. You can grab holiday-inspired treats and drinks, snap photos with Santa, and if you want to elevate the night even further, book one of the Zoo’s VIP igloos for a cozy private hangout for you and up to five guests complete with a charcuterie board and treats.

If you’re looking for a festive outing that feels a little magical, a little nostalgic, and a lot awe-inspiring, I truly can’t recommend this enough. This year’s IllumiNature is so special and I know you’re going to love it!
