You’ve seen the comments, maybe even posted one yourself: “What is there to do in Fresno?” It’s a fair question, but one I love to answer. The truth is, our city is full of gems—you just need to know where to look. That’s where this new series comes in: Fresno Datebook is your go-to guide for local adventures, whether you’re heading out with a romantic partner, your besties, your siblings, or anyone else you’d like to spend some quality time with. Each edition will feature a full night (or day!) of fun, no overplanning required. Let’s make it easier to say “yes” to something new and enjoyable right here in town.
This Week’s Itinerary: Quiet Cocktails, Street Tacos & Sweet Treats: A Laid-Back Night Out in Fresno
If you’re craving a chill, grown-up kind of night out that feels special without being stuffy, this is your lineup.
First stop: Bespoke at 711 Fulton Street
Downtown Fresno’s Bespoke is a bar unlike any other in town. With its dark academia aesthetic, moody lighting, and curated cocktails, it feels like the perfect secret hideaway for meaningful conversation. Whether you’re on a first date, catching up with an old friend, or planning a “just us” evening with your partner, you won’t have to shout over music or crowds here.
The name Bespoke means custom-tailored, and that’s exactly what they deliver. Yes, there are tried-and-true classics on the menu, but the real magic happens when you let the bartender create a cocktail just for you, based on your preferences. I asked for something with pineapple and mezcal, and ended up with a smoky-sweet drink kissed with habanero syrup, lime, and a sugared rim. Later, I went for something refreshing and floral and got a beautiful elderberry lemonade with vodka, iris syrup, and edible flowers. Each drink is made with care and explained as it’s served, almost like a mini tasting experience.
Reservations are strongly recommended, as space is limited. (But don’t worry, they’re easy to book and so worth it.)
Next: Tacos just steps away at Dab Tacos, 721 Fulton Street
After a luxe cocktail, keep the good vibes going with something delicious and low-key just two doors down. Dab Tacos serves up some of the best street-style eats in town. Their protein options range from classic carne asada to shrimp and even lobster. My go-to is their asada mula — a crispy, cheesy taco-quesadilla hybrid that’s perfectly seasoned and sauced. Pro tip: ask for their secret menu loaded nachos with chicken and shrimp. It’s a flavor bomb and a great shareable option if you’re with a group.
Grab your order and take a seat in their outdoor parklet — it’s a relaxed and festive spot great for people watching that adds to the whole experience.
End the evening with dessert at Ampersand, 1940 N Echo Ave
When you’re ready for something sweet, take the short drive to the Fresno High neighborhood and grab a scoop (or two) from local favorite, Ampersand Ice Cream. Their seasonal flavors are always creative and delicious, but I’ll forever be loyal to their whiskey caramel. Take your cone for a stroll by the Fresno High campus to see my favorite Fresno building, the historic theater, and if it’s open, peek at the sidewalk medallions honoring graduating classes going back to the 1920s. It’s a quiet but meaningful way to wrap up your night.
Final Thoughts:
Whether you’re planning a romantic evening, reconnecting with friends, or showing out-of-towners what makes Fresno cool, this three-stop night out delivers a perfect mix of style, substance, and great food. Try it out, and keep an eye out for more local adventures in the next edition of Fresno Datebook.
