Isn’t it nice when a new business opens right where you live, work, or study that happens to fill a gap you didn’t realize was so big? If you’re one of the many Fresnans who spend time downtown and have been wishing for more coffee and matcha options, you’re in luck. I recently came across a new spot called Austro Coffee, and it’s quickly becoming known for serving some of the best matcha drinks in town.
Austro opened quietly this past spring, tucked away at 744 P Street, Suite 102, and it’s already earning loyal regulars. The name “Austro” comes from a blend of the owner’s name (Austin) and his Southeast Asian heritage, which also shines through in the menu. Here, you’ll find unique flavor pairings and a focus on quality ingredients that set this shop apart from your standard coffee & tea stop.

I first learned about Austro through a TikTok video that caught my attention, and I stopped by to pick up a drink for my friend and colleague—a true matcha enthusiast. I ordered a strawberry matcha latte for her, and though I initially forgot to request non-dairy milk, the owner kindly upgraded the drink to oatmilk it at no charge. (That small act of kindness already had me sold.)
The drink lineup at Austro is impressive & unique. You’ll find flavored matchas like strawberry, coconut, sesame, and their most popular drink, the banana matcha, along with a creative selection of coffees that include taro and sesame lattes in addition to classics like mochas and black coffee. If you’re not into coffee or matcha, there are also fruity refreshers and teas such as peach, strawberry, Thai tea & green tea, and honey green tea.

My coworker described her drink as “super creamy and smooth—definitely delicious” and declared it the “top strawberry matcha in town.” Considering we’ve sampled our fair share of local matchas, that’s high praise.

As for the space itself, Austro Coffee keeps things simple. The interior is clean and minimal, with a few tables if you’d like to work or study, and there’s also patio seating outside. It’s not the kind of place you go for fancy décor or selfies—it’s where you go for a genuinely great drink made with care.

Parking is available nearby (paid, but inexpensive and card-friendly), and the shop is open weekdays from 7am to 3pm and Saturdays from 9am to 2pm. Look for the brown sandwich board sign, and when you find it, do yourself a favor—order the banana matcha.
