BJ’s Kountry Kitchen

Hello FresYes readers! I’m not sure if any of you noticed, but I’ve been missing for a few weeks. I debated sharing this with you all, but since I’ve been writing for FresYes for almost 2 years (or somewhere around there), I figured I could get personal.

Last month my grandfather passed away. He was more than just a grandfather to me-he was like my father. He raised me, and was one of the few male figures who helped shape who I’ve become as a person. His passing was completely unexpected, and it took the wind out of my sails. So, in order to take care of myself and my family, I needed to take a little bit of time off from writing. In all honesty, I didn’t have much to say anyway. I couldn’t really formulate a cohesive thought, let alone a well structured sentence. So, I kind of think I did you all a favor in saving you from reading something haphazardly put together. You’re welcome. 😉

In sharing this with you, it lends to this week’s post.

My grandmother and I have been recently running many errands together. While out and about, we’ve been treating ourselves to breakfast or lunch. Heck, let’s be honest, we’ve even been eating out for dinner too. Anyway, the latest place we visited was BJ’s Kountry Kitchen. (South/East corner of Shaw and Blackstone)

BJ's Kountry Kitchen

BJ’s Kountry Kitchen was founded in Fresno over 30 years ago. (You can read the story from the owner, Judy, here.) It has a very country ambiance, and when you walk through the door, you feel like you’ve stepped into an old fashion country coffee shop.

We happened to visit on a Friday, around 10am, so we missed the breakfast rush. However, there was only one server working for the whole restaurant. (That isn’t normal, they were just short staffed.) Having said that, it was fine. He was quick, he made sure our needs were met, and it gave my grandma and I some much needed quiet time to talk and reflect. In fact, not a single person around us complained. What I appreciated most was that the server still took time to talk to my grandma and I. He was so friendly and attentive that I had to give him an extra tip. (And no, it wasn’t about not eating yellow snow.)

This place was special to my grandmother because my grandfather use to frequent this restaurant many times after work. My grandfather worked for The Fresno Bee for over 25 years. He worked the night shift, which meant that he got out of work when the sun was coming up. Oftentimes, according to my grandmother, my grandfather and friends would stop at BJ’s Kountry Kitchen for coffee and breakfast after their shift.

Speaking of breakfast…It really is good. They are known for having wonderfully tasting biscuits and gravy. The biscuits are made fresh, daily, and they are so flaky and soft.

The menu consists of typical breakfast food, with sharing size portions. You can order breakfast or lunch all day, so even if you go during lunch time, I suggest trying the biscuits and gravy anyway.

BJ’s Kountry Kitchen has 3 locations in Fresno, and 1 in Clovis. They are open daily from 6am-2pm. So if you’re looking for a new place, or just want to try some good ole fashion country cooking, give BJ’s Kountry Kitchen a try sometime.

Before I say goodbye for this week, I wanted to say thank you for letting me share about my grandfather, and a little place he liked to visit. Perhaps you might like it there too.

Who is FresYes?

Fresyes.com was started by me, Jason Farris. Yes, I'm in real estate. I think that real estate is so much more than buying and selling homes. It's all about the lifestyle, it's about community. Here in the Fresno / Clovis area we have such a wonderful sense of community. I wanted a place that best reflects the people, the places and the lifestyle that we call home. Fresyes.com is that place. We have fabulous authors who share what makes this community of ours so special. I also write here, and not always about real estate. You can find all my posts HERE
