Fresno School of Self Defense wants to teach you to protect yourself

Last month, FresYes Realty was invited to attend a demonstration by the Fresno School of Self Defense. The school is an off-shoot of Aikido of Fresno, where students learn Aikido, a traditional Martial Art that teaches one the good virtues in humans as a way to connect with an attacker.

Fresno School of Self Defense is in the same location and employs the same teachers, but the focus is different. As it says on the school’s website: “Self-defense isn’t about winning trophies or being the best in a specific field of martial arts study. It’s about training to survive a difficult situation.”

Though you may not know it, there’s a real concern in the real estate industry about attacks on agents who are showing homes and properties. This isn’t just a concern for realtors, of course—self-defense is an important skill for pretty much anyone in any industry.

With this in mind, some of our agents jumped at the chance to learn about what the Fresno School of Self Defense has to offer. Here’s a taste of what we learned.

That’s Christopher Hein, instructor of self-defense and Aikido (martial arts), in the video. I asked him some questions about the school and why self-defense is so important.

FresYes: How long has the school been in business?

Christopher Hein: Aikido of Fresno has been in business for over 20 years. Fresno School of Self Defense started March 2017. We have been at our current location (3333 W. Sussex, Fresno) for three years.

FY: How important is self-defense?

CH: Self-defense is a way to help people feel more confident and empower them to get what they want/need from life. I would say it’s one of the most important skills one can have.

FY: What are your self-defense seminars about, and how are they different from regular classes?

CH: Our seminars are designed to help you gain new information, build good models that you can work from, and isolate specific areas of training. You would go to a seminar to pick up some new information, and develop new skills.

Our regular evening classes are where you will push the new information and skills into your unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is what will be doing the majority of the work when you are in a stressful, fast-paced situation—like conflict. It is imperative that you train the skills you learn into your unconscious mind. This is the only way that you will gain proficiency in self-defense.

Who is FresYes?

Fresyes.com was started by me, Jason Farris. Yes, I'm in real estate. I think that real estate is so much more than buying and selling homes. It's all about the lifestyle, it's about community. Here in the Fresno / Clovis area we have such a wonderful sense of community. I wanted a place that best reflects the people, the places and the lifestyle that we call home. Fresyes.com is that place. We have fabulous authors who share what makes this community of ours so special. I also write here, and not always about real estate. You can find all my posts HERE
