If I told you there’s a world-class lecture series that’s been happening in Downtown Fresno for nearly nine decades, would you believe me?
It’s true.
Since 1938, San Joaquin Valley Town Hall has been bringing the world’s greatest minds to the heart of our Valley—right onto the stage of the William Saroyan Theatre—to spark ideas, challenge perspectives, and share stories that change the way we see the world. And yet, unless someone’s personally invited you, there’s a good chance this incredible gem has flown under your radar.
That was the case for me until recent years. But now that I’ve experienced it for myself, I want everyone I know, especially younger generations, to discover how special this series really is.
A Little Backstory
The series began in 1938, at a time when the world was on the brink of war, the Great Depression was still casting its shadow, and Fresno had a population of fewer than 60,000 people. Amid those heavy times, a woman named Clio Lee Aydelott believed our Valley needed a place for “thinking adults to become better informed.” Inspired by a lecture series in San Francisco, she helped bring that same vision to Fresno, and Valley Town Hall was born.
Today, 88 seasons later, that vision lives on. Still volunteer-run, still nonprofit, and still powered by a mission to offer thought-provoking, inspiring, and educational experiences to the people of our region.
Jane Fonda and the Power of Life’s “Third Act”
This month’s speaker was none other than Jane Fonda—legendary actress, activist, and author. And let me just say: she was incredible.
Fonda spoke candidly about her journey through life, dividing it into three 30-year “acts”: childhood to early adulthood, midlife, and now, her third act (age 60+). She shared how she used to fear aging, until she did a deep “life review” that changed everything.
Through this process, she reflected on her past, childhood trauma, her mother’s mental illness and tragic death, and her own imperfections as a parent. She spoke of forgiveness, of therapy, of apologizing to her adult children, and of discovering how the earlier chapters of her life shaped her purpose now.
And yes, she brought her signature fire and wit when talking about climate change, the cause closest to her heart. She encouraged all of us—especially younger generations—to stay involved, stay vocal, and use whatever power we have to fight for the future of our planet.
She answered audience questions with grace and passion, and I’ll be honest: it was hard not to tear up a few times. She was funny, raw, vulnerable, and so incredibly grounded.
An Inspiring Experience in the Heart of Fresno
One of the things I love most about San Joaquin Valley Town Hall is that while these speakers are internationally known, the setting makes it feel personal. The Saroyan Theatre is big enough to feel electric, but small enough that there’s not a bad seat in the house. The lectures are about an hour long, with a 15-minute Q&A at the end, and there’s an option to attend a luncheon afterward for a more intimate conversation with the speaker.
I’ve also attended a lecture with Temple Grandin, a brilliant scientist and autism advocate whose work transformed modern farming and animal care. That event, too, was eye-opening and deeply moving, proving just how diverse and impactful this series is.
