Last week, when we had our first major storm of the season (let’s be real, it’s Fresno, it might be our only major storm of the season – we’re not known for our violent weather, and honestly I’m ok with that) my co-workers and I were craving cozy, hot, comfort food. One of our colleagues is new to Fresno as of this May, so we’ve been trying to introduce her to the wide variety of amazing local restaurants every chance we can get.
After searching Yelp and Google Maps to jog our memories, as to what was nearby and offered a cozy menu I was reminded of the heaping bowls of ramen my husband and I had enjoyed in the past from Rock & Noodles, just a couple blocks from my office. I checked out their current menu online and we were immediately sold.
Rock & Noodles is a fusion restaurant offering ramen, Korean BBQ, teriyaki, and an awesome selection of noodle and rice dishes in one neat little place. The dining room is no frills – offering several 4 seaters and a larger group-friendly table, tv screens showing the currently airing sporting events, and that great smell of a restaurant that is super clean and fresh, but also cooking something really delicious in the kitchen.
You’ll likely be served by one of the co-owners, and they are kind, warm and meticulous in making sure your table is clean and perfect and every dish comes out beautifully and quick. During the lunch hour, there’s a consistent crowd, but not so much so that you can’t get a seat. (It’s a place that stays busy because once you’ve tried it, you’re definitely adding it to your rotation of repeat lunch spots.)
The ramen bowls are HUGE – we’re talking bigger than your head huge, and their broths are flavorful and cuts of meat tender. (There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options available on the menu, too.) The noodle dishes are offered at your preferred level of spice (I highly recommend the yaki-udon with medium spice – so, so good!). The vegetable egg roll appetizer comes out piping hot and crisp, and not greasy at all.
While my group and I really enjoyed our rainy day lunch at Rock & Noodles, it’s also a great spot for take out, too. Rock & Noodles is open Thursday through Monday from 11am to 8pm (they close an hour early on Sundays) and they’re closed Mondays and Tuesdays. You can find them on West Shaw and Van Ness, behind DiCicco’s.
