Fresno Lunch Guide: A Father’s Legacy, a Son’s Passion, and the Best 99 Cent Taco in Fresno

There are lunch spots that impress you with their ambiance, their plating, their trendy concepts, and there are lunch spots that offer you something far more straightforward: incredibly flavorful food, genuinely warm hospitality, and a price point that makes you feel like you’ve discovered the best kept secret in Fresno. Don Tacha’s Taqueria is firmly, wonderfully, in that second category.

Located near Downtown Fresno on the SW corner of Blackstone and MacKenzie (between Belmont and Divisadero) Don Tacha’s is a family owned taqueria with a story worth knowing. The restaurant was founded by Don Tacha himself, and has recently been passed down to his son Jose, who is running it with an obvious passion and heart that you can feel when you arrive. This is the kind of generational ownership that keeps the soul of a restaurant alive.

Don Tacha’s is also home to the 99 cent taco. You read that correctly. For just under a dollar a piece, you can order ground beef, chicken, or chicharron tacos, up to four at that price, and enjoy a genuinely flavorful, satisfying lunch for less than $5. In a world where lunch for one rarely comes in under $15 anymore, Don Tacha’s taco plates feel like a small miracle.

If your budget allows for a little more, the arrachera tacos are an absolute must. Arrachera, or skirt steak, is the star of the menu, and on my recent visit it was phenomenal. The meat is perfectly cooked and seasoned, served with onions, cilantro, and beans, alongside lemon slices and your choice of housemade salsas. I went with the habanero, and it was bold, spicy, and completely fantastic. Beyond the arrachera, the menu also includes cabeza, carnitas, adobada, fried fish, and shrimp tacos, giving you plenty of delicious reasons to return and work your way through the options.

And don’t sleep on the loaded asada “fries,” made with thinly sliced fresh potato chips piled high with asada. Save a little room for churros on the way out too, because dessert for $4 is never a bad idea.

Don Tacha’s is a colorful, casual, open-air spot with covered seating that gives it a relaxed, come-as-you-are energy that perfectly matches the food. A heads up for warm weather visits: there are fans and misters to keep things comfortable, but the space is not air conditioned, so plan accordingly on those extra hot Fresno afternoons. To drink, they’ve got horchata, jamaica, micheladas, Jarritos sodas, and Mexican Cokes, all the right accompaniments to a great taco spread.

More good news: Don Tacha’s isn’t just a lunch destination. They’re open every day except Sunday from 11am to 10pm, making them a fantastic option for a late afternoon bite or a casual dinner run too. Friendly service, a relaxed vibe, and food that punches way above its price point — Don Tacha’s is the kind of place that reminds you why supporting local, family owned restaurants matters so much. Go soon, order the arrachera, you can thank me later.

Who is FresYes?

Fresyes.com was started by me, Jason Farris. Yes, I'm in real estate. I think that real estate is so much more than buying and selling homes. It's all about the lifestyle, it's about community. Here in the Fresno / Clovis area we have such a wonderful sense of community. I wanted a place that best reflects the people, the places and the lifestyle that we call home. Fresyes.com is that place. We have fabulous authors who share what makes this community of ours so special. I also write here, and not always about real estate. You can find all my posts HERE
