Vote For a Fresno Park Project to Receive $20,000 From NRPA & Disney

Like parks? Get ready to do some voting.

Fresno is one of 15 cities that has been chosen by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) to receive funding through its “Meet Me at the Park” grant program.

The NRPA, in collaboration with Disney, ESPN, and ABC, will provide these communities with resources to improve local parks through projects that connect kids to nature, inspire kids and families to live healthier lifestyles, and increase kids’ access to sports.

Three Fresno park projects have been identified as eligible for the $20,000 grant, and it’s up to voters to decide which project will receive the funds.

The three projects are:

• Highway City Community Science Center, which will bring a teaching Mobile Science Vehicle equipped with a science laboratory to park sites throughout the city.

• Holmes Park, which is looking to implement a Healthy Lifestyle Fitness Program to promote health and fitness to young people.

• Ted C. Wills Community Center, which will be the site of an educational garden that will teach young people how to eat healthier.

These are three great choices, and it’s tough to choose among them.

Voting is open until Sunday, April 30, and you’re allowed to vote once each day (it’s a simple, quick process — I did it myself). Register and vote here.

I grew up in Fresno. Relaxed in its calm breezes, listened with my dad to the crack of the bat at little league baseball games when I was a kid and now take my son to do the same at minor league games. I broadened my mind at its schools (I went to high school right here at San Joaquin Memorial, and to college at Fresno State!) I love that if I drive for two hours in one direction, I can be in the mountains. For two hours in another, luxuriating on a California beach. I can enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere of San Francisco or Los Angeles, but still be able to come home to relaxation, calm, and quiet.

I am lucky enough to work in a profession that allows me to work as an advocate for my clients; to use every tool at my disposal to get a job done well for them, and with as little stress and expense as possible.

I love my city. I love my job. One inspires my excellence for the other.
