If you love Fresno’s vibrant dining scene, chances are you’ve enjoyed a meal (or ten) at one of the restaurants from the talented minds behind Heirloom, Butterfish, Mayd Modern, Saizon, and The Limelite. Their latest venture, Otherside Café, just opened its doors, and after one visit, I can already tell it’s going to be a local favorite.
My coworkers and I stopped by for an early lunch on just their second day of business, expecting the usual growing pains—long waits, slower service—but we were pleasantly surprised. The ordering process is simple: line up, place your order at the counter, and then find your own seating. Unlike Heirloom, there’s no table service, but the process felt fairly efficient, even with a steady crowd.

A Bright, Welcoming Space
Walking into Otherside Café, the first thing you’ll notice is how bright, airy, and crisp the interior feels. It’s a great spot to settle in with a latte and get some work done. The seating extends to a covered patio, equipped with heaters and fans for year-round comfort. The vibe outside is more laid-back, making it a great choice for groups or families with kids. Indoors, we saw plenty of solo diners and remote workers sipping their coffee from ceramic mugs while typing away.

A Menu Full of Standouts
Otherside Café’s menu is an all-day affair, offering housemade pastries (eventually, donuts too!), hearty breakfast sandwiches, fancy toasts, tartines, “soul bowls,” sandwiches, soups, and salads. They also serve a creative coffee and tea menu with unique flavors you won’t find elsewhere.
I opted for the This & That, which let me sample two menu items: a Tartine and a cup of the Soup of the Day. I chose the Chicken Tartine, an open-faced, flavor-packed chicken salad sandwich, and the Butternut Squash Soup, which was beautifully finished with crème fraîche, a drizzle of olive oil, and roasted garlic. The soup was silky-smooth and packed with depth—absolute perfection on a chilly day.

My coworker let me sneak a bite of their Almond Chicken Soul Bowl, and I already know I’ll be ordering it next time. The balance of textures, the quality of the chicken, and the light yet flavorful dressing made it a standout dish.

On the coffee side, I went with the Blackberry Latte, which was smooth, not overly sweet, and just the right balance of fruit and espresso. I also tried my coworker’s Spiced Ube Latte, which had a more subtle flavor than I expected but was still delicious and incredibly unique.

The Attention to Detail is Next-Level
One thing this restaurant group consistently excels at is crafting thoughtful, well-balanced flavors and textures. Take my Chicken Salad Tartine, for example—every element was intentionally prepared. The celery was sliced ultra-thin on a bias, ensuring a light crunch without overpowering the dish with that intense, raw celery bite. These small details make a huge difference and show the level of care put into each plate.
A Few Tweaks Could Improve the Experience
Since it was only Day 2, I expect the team is still fine-tuning the flow of the restaurant. One small challenge I noticed was the ordering area—it gets a little crowded and can feel slightly overstimulating as people navigate between the line and seating. Adjusting the entry flow (perhaps having the line wrap toward the outdoor patio before entering) could help ease congestion. But again, these are the kind of details that evolve over time, and knowing this team, they’ll likely refine the experience quickly.
Final Thoughts
Otherside Café is already delivering on the fresh, innovative flavors we’ve come to expect from this restaurant group. Whether you’re looking for a bright coffee shop to work from, a satisfying breakfast or lunch spot, or a place to meet up with friends, this café has you covered.
I’m already looking forward to my next visit—and another round of that phenomenal soup.
Otherside Café is located at 2886 E Shepherd Ave Ste 101 in northeast Fresno, and is open 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm.
