If you’re looking for a place to enjoy delicious food and celebrate a local success story, head to Chez Maryse this weekend for their first-anniversary celebration. Located at 4945 E McKinley Ave in Southeast Fresno, this French café offers an inviting atmosphere, mouthwatering French pastries, and a full menu of breakfast and lunch specialties, plus a bit of traditional American fare.

From Laos to France to Fresno: A Story of Resilience and Community
Chez Maryse isn’t just another café; it’s the result of an incredible journey. Owner Sam Ly-Yang’s story began in the 1980s when, as a young girl, she fled war-torn Laos and found refuge with a welcoming French family. This family not only provided her with safety and love but also introduced her to the joys of French cuisine and culture. They taught her how to bake and prepare French dishes, planting the seeds of a lifelong passion.

When Sam eventually moved to the United States at 18, she worked hard, earning master’s degrees in psychology and social work. She went on to found a nonprofit supporting individuals with disabilities, and through her café, she continues to give back to the community by creating job opportunities for those who need them most.
The name “Chez Maryse” is a beautiful tribute to the woman who took Sam in and taught her to bake. It translates to “The House of Maryse,” reflecting both the warmth of that original home and the welcoming atmosphere Sam now creates in Fresno.

Delicious French Cuisine with a Personal Touch
Head Chef Antoine Garrido, who hails from France, brings authentic French flavors to Chez Maryse’s menu. From flaky pastries to hearty, savory dishes, there’s plenty of options that are both a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. The Croque Monsieur is a standout and customer favorite featuring French-style ham and Swiss cheese on fresh bread, served with Chef Antoine’s special vinaigrette salad. If you’re in the mood for a crêpe, the Daisy Crêpe with ham, Swiss cheese, eggs, parsley, and a fresh salad is another great option.

Beyond the food, the café itself is a delight. The interior is lit with a combination of natural light and warm lamps creating a relaxed, cozy atmosphere. The service is genuinely kind and welcoming, making you feel like a guest in someone’s home rather than just a customer.
