Grandma chic? Before you throw away the dinnerware your grandparents passed down, you should know that antiques are making a comeback. This is also true for interior design, which is experiencing a renaissance. Vintage and retro styles are all the rage in the interior design world. One design, in particular, continues to trend: steampunk. There is a demand for handcrafted furniture and decor from this retro rebellion.

One of Clovis’ most popular events, Glorious Junk Days, was created to showcase items not found at the town’s antique fairs. The “junk” includes DIY projects, handcrafted items, architectural finds, and repurposed and refurbished items. Over 155 dealers attend every show, so plan on spending a lot of time at Glorious Junk Days.

The popularity of the event comes as no surprise, as people have expressed an interest in DIY-everything. In fact, Generation Y, those born between 1980 and 1994, have been nicknamed Generation DIY. It is in our DNA to create and use available resources to survive. Some find DIY as an escape from the stress of everyday life.

So what will make a great investment? Asian antiques are always valuable but beware of fakes. Teacups and sets are highly collectible and in-style, but only sets over 100 years old are worth anything. In fact, couples getting married are no longer putting plain, white plates on their registry. They want their home to feel unique and are in turn, adding older dishes to the list.

Consumers are decorating their homes with vintage items, such as Grandfather clocks. Antique textiles, particularly American quilts, have seen increased demand and prices. There is also a renewed interest in folk art and sculpture.

Vintage and antique toys from the 1940s to the 1970s are desirable. This includes cast iron toys, robot toys, marbles, comics, toy cars, and Japanese dolls. Older superhero comic books, like Batman, Spider-Man and Superman are in high demand. ‘Star Wars’ memorabilia remains popular as the franchise ages and younger generations express interest. Steiff stuffed animals are always popular, but ensure that they are in top-notch condition. World War II and Civil War memorabilia are highly sought after. Look for items such as swords, guns, hats, and patches. If you come across antique automotive advertising, don’t pass it by! Similarly, with the rise of man caves has come the demand for oil advertising as decor.

Clovis is home to a vast selection of antique and collectible stores, carrying everything from coins to comics and clothing. Clovis Coins and Cards buys, sells and trades collectible currency.  By visiting a coin shop like Clovis Coins and Cards, you will be able to evaluate the coin firsthand before you buy it. The trusted owners at Clovis Coins can provide shoppers with valuable information that will help you with your purchase. Clovis Coins is located at 442 Pollasky Avenue.

Once Upon a Time, also located on Pollasky, is a collective of repurposed, farmhouse and vintage items.

Who is FresYes?

Fresyes.com was started by me, Jason Farris. Yes, I'm in real estate. I think that real estate is so much more than buying and selling homes. It's all about the lifestyle, it's about community. Here in the Fresno / Clovis area we have such a wonderful sense of community. I wanted a place that best reflects the people, the places and the lifestyle that we call home. Fresyes.com is that place. We have fabulous authors who share what makes this community of ours so special. I also write here, and not always about real estate. You can find all my posts HERE
