What’s Hot & Happening August 11 – 13

By FresYes Writing Team

Welcome to the weekend! As our days of freedom come to an end and the school season looms on the horizon, let us relish the memories we’ve created during our daring escapades. Capture the laughter, the sunsets, and the inevitable ice cream mustaches in photos that will serve as the ultimate weapons against the back-to-school blues. Did you see our BEST Ice Cream Poll?

Remember those random places you always drove past but never stopped to explore? Well, now’s your chance! Pick a quaint shop, an obscure museum, or a park you’ve only seen from a distance, and just dive in. Or you could always go with some or all of our suggestions. We have choices!

FRIDAY NIGHT

Let’s dive back into Sushi. Yes, we could live on a steady diet of Tacos and Ampersand but we’re better than that. Ok, maybe it’s just that we would like to think that we’re better than that.

For Friday Night, with or without the kids, let’s head to Namikaze.

Start with an app of Shishito Peppers, we really like the tempura style. If you have the kids with you might also get a plate of Edamame. This way they don’t eat all your peppers. If that doesn’t work, you can also tell them that one in 10 shishito peppers has a kick of heat, but most of them are mild. You could tell them they are playing a deadly game of Hot Pepper Roulette.

For bonus points with the kids, challenge them to say Shishito without accidentally saying a cuss word. They’ll say a cuss word for sure and probably crack up about it.(pronounced shee-SHEE-toh)

Even if you get a “Hot ” one remember that in Scoville Heat Units, a scale used to measure the spiciness of chiles, shishitos can run from 50-200 SHU. That’s really not hot at all. For comparison, the jalapeño will come in at an average 5,000 SHU.

For the bowl people, try their Tonkotsu Ramen. It’s savory pork bone marrow broth topped with sliced braised pork, seasoned egg, scallions, seaweed and sprouts.

For the roll people – we like the Origami. Hamachi, salmon, spicy tuna, escolar, avocado wrapped in cucumber, topped with tobiko, scallions, teriyaki sauce, ponzu, crushed wasabi peas.

They also have some great Nigiri and Sashimi for the traditionalists.

SATURDAY NIGHT:

The Shinzen Friendship Garden is in Woodward Park on the southeast side. On Saturday evening they are holding a Japanese ceremony called Tōrō Nagashi.

Traditionally, this Japanese ceremony honors the memory of loved ones. During the festival of Obon, it is believed that ancestors come back to spend time with the living. On the final evening of the festival, paper lanterns are set afloat to accompany the spirits as they depart for another year.

This sounds strangely similar to Día de Muertos, right? If you haven’t seen a Japanese Floating Lantern Festival you’re in for a real treat!

Yes, they’ll have food trucks (Colorado Grill & Kona Ice)Yes they’ll have Taiko Drums too!

Taiko starts at 6:30PM with the Lantern Ceremony from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. The sun sets at 7:53 PM.

Head YES man at FresYes.com
I grew up in Fresno. Relaxed in its calm breezes, listened with my dad to the crack of the bat at little league baseball games when I was a kid and now take my son to do the same at minor league games. I broadened my mind at its schools (I went to high school right here at San Joaquin Memorial, and to college at Fresno State!) I love that if I drive for two hours in one direction, I can be in the mountains. For two hours in another, luxuriating on a California beach. I can enjoy the cosmopolitan atmosphere of San Francisco or Los Angeles, but still be able to come home to relaxation, calm, and quiet.

I love where I live, and I also love what I do. I'm lucky to be able to work in a profession in which I get to build relationships; one that has me meeting new people each and every day and helping them to build new lives in my beloved city. I'm lucky enough to work in a profession in which I can marry cutting-edge technologies and marketing techniques to good, old-fashioned, nose-to-the-grindstone work. I am lucky enough to work in a profession that allows me to work as an advocate for my clients; to use every tool at my disposal to get a job done well for them, and with as little stress and expense as possible.

I love my city. I love my job. One inspires my excellence for the other.

Who is FresYes?

Fresyes.com was started by me, Jason Farris. Yes, I'm in real estate. I think that real estate is so much more than buying and selling homes. It's all about the lifestyle, it's about community. Here in the Fresno / Clovis area we have such a wonderful sense of community. I wanted a place that best reflects the people, the places and the lifestyle that we call home. Fresyes.com is that place. We have fabulous authors who share what makes this community of ours so special. I also write here, and not always about real estate. You can find all my posts HERE
